David Astley07:16 11/06/19I went to this store to buy an oil catch can for my Nissan Navara D40 turbo diesel 4WD. I asked for one with half-inch inlets and outlets because that was what my mechanic had specified. The woman serving me (I think she was one of the owners) assured me it was half-inch, even though it looked smaller to me. So I bought it for 1800 pesos which seemed to be the going rate for oil catch cans on Lazada, so no issue with the price. I took it back to my mechanic in Pasig but he refused to install it because he said the inlets and outlets were 5/16ths and if he installed it on my Navara it would damage the engine. He said what they had sold me was only suitable for gasoline engines up to 1500cc. I couldn't take it back straight away because I was travelling to Bataan the next day, but when I got back I returned to Richcar and asked them to change it to one with half-inch inlets and outlets. They wouldn't do that saying it was a 'universal' model that fits all types of gasoline and diesel engines. There was an installer there who said he could fit it to my car on the spot for 600p and show me that it worked fine. It was clear that they weren't prepared to change it (I suspect it was the only type they had in stock) and I wasn't going to get my money back, so I foolishly agreed to let them install it. When I got home I did a bit of research on the web because driving back I had felt uncomfortable about the fact that Richcar's advice contradicted my mechanic's advice. Immediately I discovered that my mechanic was right and the Richcar installer was wrong. Everything I read about oil catch cans made reference to the fact that the inlet and outlet size must be the same (or larger) than the size of the tubes on the positive crankcase ventilation (PCV) system - which on the NIssan Navara is half-inch. The Richcar had used a smaller tube inside the PCV tubes to act as a reducer to make it fit. To be sure about this advice I contacted a mechanic friend in Australia and he replied: "Oil catch cans inlets and outlets need to be of the same diameter as that of the OEM's PCV tube design size. There is a reason for this: The manufacturer is concerned with keeping the crankcase free of pressure build up. Cheap $40.00 oil catch cans like the one you bought will have much smaller inlets/outlets, or fittings acting as reducers, which reduce the flow rates of the PCV System thus causing back-pressure in the crankcase. This build-up of pressure will cause engine oil to weep from the crankcase seals etc as they were not made to hold pressure. Get it off your NIssan immediately and replace it with one with the proper size inlet and outlet tube size". I won't be going back to Richcar again. It seems they are only interested in selling stuff, not in caring for your vehicle. And their installer does not have sufficient knowledge to be making modifications that won't damage your engine. A very frustrating experience involving two trips from Rizal province to Banawe St and another to Pasig - all up about two days of my time wasted for nothing. TIME-OUT CAR accessories
